T-1 News January 3-7, 2011

We have had a very busy first week back to school. The boys have jumped into the second semester ready to work and eager to learn! Here is other stuff we have doing:
A PEEK AT THIS WEEK
This week we talked about proper nouns. We paid special attention to the nouns that name special places (ex.- McDonalds, Mississippi, Oxford). We also discussed sequencing (how things have to happen in order so that they make sense) and the contractions with 've and 're. We also reviewed some of our word families and spelling patterns from 1st semester. When we start our new basal book in just over two weeks, we will begin taking weekly spelling tests. Our theme for this week and the next week is Community and Working Together. We are discussing what makes a person our friend and how people in our community can also be our friends. We also started talking about our Character Trait, Empathy. We learned that being empathetic means understanding how other people are feeling and why they might be feeling a particular way. In Math we began Unit 6. We solely concentrated on one skill for the week because it is a very important and, sometimes, difficult skill to master. Our skill was coins and their values. We looked at the four main coins that we use (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter). We learned their values and how many of each coin would make 100 cents. we also practiced counting mixed coin combination up 25 cents. I encourage you to keep practicing this at home as well.

LOOKING AHEAD
Next week, we will continue to talk about Community and Working Together. We will also spend a good amount of time working on our writing skills. I am striving for the boys to be able to correctly write a five sentence paragraph by the spring, as well as make their fictional stories more exciting by adding multiple sentences full of detail. Also, if your child has anything he would like to share that goes a long with our weekly theme, then I encourage him to bring it in. In Language Arts, our weekly skills will be the r-controlled vowels er, ir, & ur, the inflections -er & -est (when used to compare things), and more proper nouns: days of the week. We will also continue reviewing word families and spelling patterns. Our Word Wall words for the week are around, more, myself, these, use. We will continue talking about our character trait, Empathy. In Math we will continue Chapter 6. Our skills for the week will be time (to the hour and half-hour) and calendars.
