T-1 News May 16-20, 2011

We had a great week! I really appreciate those of you that have volunteered to help with our upcoming Field Day. The boys are getting so excited about next week! Please check out the time of each activity and mark your calendars!!!! Don't forget to follow Oxford University School on Facebook, too! Our school has its own group page. Here is other stuff we have doing:

A PEEK AT THIS WEEK
This week we talked about the short vowel /e/ in the -ea- spelling pattern, classifying, and using go & went. We also reviewed review the r-controlled vowel ar. We took our spelling test and all did our very best. Our theme for this week was Jungle. We discussed what things we might be able to find in the African jungle as opposed to the South American rainforest. In Math we started Unit 4 in the next level of our math book. Our skills were adding tens or ones; mixed addition with tens & ones; and counting on with 2-digit numbers. We also took our end of Chapter 4 test today. I was quite pleased with the results. :)

LOOKING AHEAD
Next week, we will do a unit about Space. We will discuss the planets and other things that are found in outer space. The boys are especially excited about this after we watched the space shuttle, Endeavour, launch on its last mission Monday. T-1 has been spending a good amount of time working on our writing skills. The boys are able to correctly write a six sentence paragraph, as well as make their fictional stories more exciting by adding multiple sentences full of detail. Now we are really concentrating on editing--making sure our words are spelled correctly, our sentences make sense, our punctuation is correct, and our stories "flow" in story order. The boys are doing a great job with this, but we are still working on this becoming more of an independent skill instead of teacher directed. Also, if your child has anything he would like to share that goes along with our weekly theme, then I encourage him to bring it in. In Language Arts, our weekly skills will be reviewing all of our skills from this year. Our Word Wall words for the week will be words about things that can be found in space. In Math we will practice counting money and telling time to the quarter hour.
