A Peek At This Week
We had a lot of fun this week learning all about penguins and polar animals. We painted a beautiful Arctic scene and added a handmade penguin to it. We've been working hard on word families, alphabetizing, learning new sight words, and telling time to the hour. We are really diving into the meatiest part of our word work and we prepare for our achievement tests in the spring and first grade in the fall. On Friday we watched National Geographic's Polar Prowl, enjoyed an extra long outside recess (instead of rest time) and made ice cream in a bag (see the blog for pictures). Then we tested blubber and air filled pouches to see how polar animals insulate themselves from the cold.

Here are some questions you can use to quiz your little ones on penguin facts:
  1. Penguins are birds that can't do what? (fly)
  2. What is a group of penguins called? (a rookery)
  3. How many different kinds of penguins are there? (17)
  4. What is the largest penguin? (Emperor Penguin)
  5. What is the smallest penguin? (Fairy aka Little Blue)
  6. Do penguins live in the northern or southern hemisphere? (the southern hemisphere)
  7. Do we live in the northern or southern hemisphere? (the northern hemisphere)
  8. What imaginary line separates the earth into two hemispheres? (the equator)
  9. Where does the Emperor penguin daddy keep his egg? (balanced on his feet)
  10. What covers the Emperor penguin's egg? (a brood pouch)
  11. What do penguins eat? (fish, squid, and krill)
  12. What's it called when a penguin slides on it's belly? (tobogganing)
  13. What's your favorite penguin? Why?

Looking Ahead

Next week we will be celebrating 100 Days of school. Your child's "100 Projects" are due no later than Friday. Please email me with any questions. Our 100 Days Party will be Friday morning from 8:30 to 10:00. We will be making 100 glasses, 100 GORP* snack mix, 100 Froot Loop Necklaces (these are pretty but rarely make it home...crunch crunch), a 100 finger painting, stamping 100 times, and hopping 100 inches. Then we will have snack. Our room moms should be contacting you about items needed. We would love to have parents come and help with the tables. We will also be hiding and finding 100 Hershey kisses at the treehouse.

*The GORP is an activity where the children take ten each of ten different items and mix them together to make a 100 item snack. We have assigned each child to bring the following:
